I had the great pleasure of sitting down with Yadi back in 2020 between pandemic lockdowns! Yadi Arifin (owner of Fika Cafe in Kensington Market), who is Chinese Indonesian - grew up in Singapore, and then moved to Toronto in the late 80’s. After he graduated from university, he followed his passion for the culinary arts, studying Baking and Pastry Arts at George Brown College. He then moved out west to Alberta to work at a hotel, making pastry! 

After 7 years of working in the culinary field, Yadi took a break and received an offer for a management position. Little did he know, the knowledge he gained while working in management helped him lay the foundation for his future endeavour.  Since Yadi took over Fika from the previous owner in 2015, the cafe has flourished under Arifin’s guidance, and he has expanded Fika into one of Toronto’s most cherished cafes today! 

Finding the right people, building a dream team is never easy. Yadi emphasizes how fortunate he is working with some talented and hardworking folks - head baker and barristers! Teamwork makes the dream work!

I am a big fan of Fika’s signature Cardamon Spiced Latte and their famous Swedish Cinnamon Bun, made in house from scratch with their unique blend of spices and topped with Nordic pearl sugar chunks. Perfect treats to enjoy at their backyard patio!
