Coffee Cup Coaster Making Workshop with Cabbagetown resident Margaret Grottenthaler (aka the Lawless Needle)

January 21 2023
1PM - 3PM

Labour of Love | 223 Carlton Street, Toronto
(south-side of Carlton, west of Parliament street)

Beat the winter blues and learn how to make a beautiful and functional embroidery coaster that shows your coffee (or tea) cup some love!

In this 2 hour embroidery workshop, lead by local Cabbagetown resident Margaret Grottenthaler, you will learn stitches your grandmother may have known, but are definitely not your Grannie’s embroidery! Our approach will be freeing, creative and not confined. It’s all about improvising with layered stitches, threads, fabrics and colour to create a piece that is uniquely yours.

You’ll also discover that hand-stitching is a calming, meditative process. The workshop fee includes all materials, tools and your own starter embroidery tool kit. No stitching experience is required.

About Margaret Grottenthaler

I learned to embroider as a teenager. It was the 70s after all! No jean jacket was safe. I put this activity aside for many years, but came back to it about 10 years ago, although as an infrequent hobby. In 2018, a fabric store I frequented closed and I bought ALL of its embroidery thread inventory. After that I had no excuse not to make stitching a regular practice (and I need to use up that thread before I can shop again!). As an art quilter, I include hand stitching in my work and often embellish garments I make with some abstract embroidery. I love the texture created by layering stitched patterns and different types of threads on different fabric surfaces. I hope you’ll join me in this workshop to make a beautiful item, learn a new skill and spend a lively afternoon with some new friends.
